December 6, 2012 – Troy, Michigan – Donald C. Kaylor, PG, CP, Kenneth Majetic, and Carey J. Suhan, PE, have earned certifications from the International Code Council as Class A and B Underground Storage Tank (UST) System Operators. This allows TEC to add Class A & B Operator services and training for Class C Operators to its existing array of engineering consulting services. Markets that will benefit from these additional services include municipal, educational, and transportation to name a few.
In May, the Michigan DEQ released an email describing changes to the UST rules and notifying the regulated community of the certification requirements. Federal and state laws require that every underground storage tank (UST) facility have certified Class A, Class B, and Class C operators. Class A and B Operators must pass a written test to be Michigan Certified UST Operators, and Class C Operators must be properly trained by an appropriate source (such as the Class B Operator). With very few exceptions, UST facilities must have an on-site Class C Operator whenever the tanks are in operation.
The Class A Operator is the person who has overall responsibility to operate and maintain the underground storage tank system. The Class B Operator is person who implements day-to-day aspects of operating, maintaining, and record keeping for UST systems at one or more facilities. The Class C Operator is an individual who is responsible for responding to alarms or other indications of emergencies caused by spills, releases, or overfills associated with a UST system.
The deadline for compliance with the Operator requirements was August 8, 2012. Call TEC now at 248-588-6200 for UST compliance assistance.
