Geotechnical Driller
Summary
A geotechnical driller operates the drill rig and drilling equipment to obtain soil samples
used by engineers. Geotechnical drilling is done to determine soil characteristics for design
of future construction.
Duties
The daily duties of geotechnical drillers are:- Operating the drilling equipment, including auger, mud, rotary, core, and Geoprobe drilling and performs the work safely. Drilling operations are routinely extended to shallow and moderate depths.
- Drilling samples obtained from geoprobe, automatic SPT hammer, or cathead SPT hammer.
- Obtain and measure groundwater samples.
- Maintain drilling equipment, vehicles, machinery, tools, and drill rigs. Report problems or conditions with equipment to the drilling manager.
- Follow written work instructions, including site maps, boring layouts, drilling instructions, and site specific information.
- Work with other drillers as part of the drilling team.
- Identifies and locates utilities and other site safety concerns.
- Maintains drilling logs, including soil classifications, or is willing to learn logging activities on the job.
- Performs site clean-up, including filling in drill holes, ruts, pavement patches, and other site disturbances.
- Travel to drill sites approximately 1 to 2 hours each way per day. Travel may be in drill rig with other members of drill team, in company issued vehicles, or as mileage- reimbursable travel.
- Setting downhole geotechnical instrumentation.
- Install geotechnical monitoring wells.
- Monitor and measure cased borehole infiltration tests.
- Heavy maintenance on drilling equipment including welding, cutting, and fabricating as needed.
Requirements
Job Requirements:- 40 to 50 hours per week when averaged over a full year.
- Year-round outdoor work.
- Regular lifting up to 50 lbs. Occasional lifting up to 100 lbs. or team lifting as necessary.
- Required to obtain commercial drivers license (CDL) within 6 months of hire.
- Required to complete 40-hour OSHA training within 6 months of hire for environmental drilling and sampling. Training will be paid by TEC.
- Working with heavy equipment and some exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals.
- High School education or equivalent.
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written forms.
- Pre-employment plus random drug and alcohol screening, as well as post-incident screening.
- Frequent walking, standing, or squatting on uneven ground.
- Previous drilling experience preferred.
